During a routine service, the receiver drier, which is a canister containing desiccant is replaced and the system is pulled into a deep vacuum. This effectively boils off any moisture left and then the system is re-gassed with new dry refrigerant.
The refrigerant gas in auto air conditioning systems can be potentially harmful under high pressures and can cause severe cold burns and blindness, so repairs and maintenance is best done by an experienced professional.
